REQUEST FOR A REFERENDUM. FIRM REPLY TO LABOR. STATEMENT BY DEFENCE MINISTER. Per Press Association. Wellington, November 10. The Minister of Defence (Hon. James Allen) replying to a request by the Secretary of the United Federation of Labour, that a referendum be taken before the compulsory provisions of the Military Service Act are enforced, states; “A steady flow of reinforcements is necessary for ,the safety of the Empire. No doubt many men of military age are willing to serve, but have found it difficult to judge whether their turn has come, and the fairest plan in such a case is to allow the ballot to decide for them. The matter has been very carefully considered in all its aspects by Par- [ Lament and it is the duty of the i Government to carry out its wishes.
