> Mr and Mrs W. H. Copper, of Leslie Avenue, Morningside, have just celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. They were married at St. Bridge's Church, Liverpool, on November 1, 1866, and came to New Zealand with a family of six children in the steamer Norfolk in 1881. Two more children were horn in New Zealand.

After 56 years' residence in New Zealand Mrs Rachel A. Chaplin, of Murdoch Road, Grey Lynn, passed away last week, at the ripe age of 93 years. Mrs Chaplin was born and brought up in London within the sound of Bow Bells, and came to New Zealand with her husband, the late Thomas Chaplin, by the ship Mermaid, arriving in Auckland on November 20, 1860.

Mr F. K. de Castro, chief clerk of the Education Department, has been appointed Secretary for Education in succession to Sir Edward Gibbes. whose place he has been filling temporarily. The new secretary has been connected with the Public Service since 1874—for the first four years with the Treasury, and since 1878 with tfhe Education Department, when it first came into existence.

Dr. A. W. Averill, Bishop of Auckland, arrived in New Plymouth by the Rarawa yesterday. Dr. Averill will take charge of St. Mary's parish for three weeks, during the absence of tho Rev. A. Hi. Colville. During his stay in the district he will visit Stratford, Inglewood, Waitara, Lepperton, ITrenui, Uruti, Okato, Rahotu, and Fitzroy. On November 26, Dr. Averill will conduct a confirmation service at St. Mary's Church.
