SENSATION AT ADDINCTON.

STEWARDS' STAND DESTROYED.

FIRE BRIGADE HOOTED.

Per Press Association. Christchnrch, November 7

A great sensation was caused at the Metropolitan Trotting Club's track at Addington this afternoon by the discovery of a. fire in the stewards' stand, recently erected at a cost of £IO,OOO. Buckets and garden hoses were brought to bear on the flames, but a high wind was blowing, and speedily brought about the destruction of the building. The fire brigade would not attend till the stand was half gone (the track being outside the fire district), and only came after the superintendent had made himself acquainted with the seriousness of the position. The firemen were ' hooted, indignation running high at the refusal to attend.

The building was insured for £BOOO, but furniture valued at £3OOO was destroyed. After a postponement of over an hour to allow the smoke to clear, racing was resumed. At th© time of the outbreak the Cup horseg were just going to the post.

ANTI-SHOUTING IN AUCKLAND.

Auckland, November 7

In the Magistrate's Court. Alfred Nation, licensee of the Imperial Hotel for shouting, was fined £5. Herbert Tilley, for consuming, was fined £2. Alexander McDonald, for consuming ■liquor paid for by Samuel Atkins, Licensee of the Star. Hotel, was fined £3. Atkins was fined £lO. Arthur Hislop Ronayne was fined £lO for consuming.

During the hearing of the cases it was intimated by counsel for one of the defendants, that he had been instructed to proceed in the Supreme Court for a, declaratory judgment aa to the validity of the regulations providing for a bar tenders' suspension for six months when convicted of a breach of the regulations.

Wanganui, November 8

At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Ernest Rummerstrum, manager of the Maoriland Dairy Company, was fined £2O for selling short-weight butter, and four grocers for retailing same were fined £1 each.
