Dr. A. W. Averill, Bishop of Auckland, is expected to arrive in New Plymouth next Tuesday. He will take charge of St. Mary's parish for several weeks, during the absence of the Rev. A. H. Colville in Tasmania.

Mrs T. Russ, Opunake Road, received a cablegram to-day stating that her son, Lance-Corporal Clarry Russ, who was wounded in the left thigh in action, is now at the Walton-on-Thames Military Hospital (England), and is progressing favourably. Lance-Corporal Russ is well known in Stratford and was for some'time employed at the H.B. Clothing Stores, Broadway.

Last night at the annual meeting, Mr T. Marshall, ex-conductor cf the Stratford Municipal Brass Ban 1, vas the recipient of a salad bowl from tlie members of the Band and a fountain pen from a class of boys whom he had been tutoring for some mouths past. Several members spoke in terms of great appreciation of the work that Mr Marshall has done for the Band during the four years that he occupied the position. Mr Marshall suitably replied, thanking all for their kindness in word and deed.

Two Rhodes scholars arc to bo selected in New Zealand this year. One will take the place of Lieutenant Athol Hudson (Killed in action) and the other selection will be made in the ordinary course. The selection committee is to meet at Government House on December Ist, Victoria College has nominated Mr H. A Mackenzie (son of Professor Mackenzie) and Mr A. V. Meldrum (son of Lieu-tenant-Colonel Meldrum.) Both Mr Meldrum and his lather are at the front, and Mr Mackenzie is going imo camp. The Otago nominees are Messrs A. M. Rhinesmath and .!. WHinton, while Auckland has nominated Messrs W. J. Piatt and H. E. Reynolds. The Canterbury nominations are, not yet announced.
