CORRESPONDENCE.
PATRIOTISM AND BUSINESS.
PlV>. v Tmi, $pTTfpF Sir,—Your correspondent "Fair play is bonnie play" in last night's issue wonders if it has ever occurred to the, Ladies' Patriotic Committee the harm they are- doing in the name of patriotism to a certain section of the Stratford business people. Please allow me to wonder it it has-ever..oc-curredvto your correspondent that l|is ■figures/, are all wrong, and therefore his deductions quite untenable/ ; s)e speaks .-fjipf; the tea-room takings as aboutrrfo-per week or £260 per annum, and,? dividing this amongst the four refreshment rooms, claims that each is taxed to the tune or £65 per annum. I think £3 15 s per week, or say £95 per annum will be found to be nearer the mark. This works out at £4B I/)S each. Taking then this figure, the utmost that can be said is that the ta< is represented by the profit that would accrue on £4B 15s takings. "With profit on a 20 per cent, basis, each of the four would lose £8 2s 6d poi» annum, or 3s ljd per' week. Is thi..- a heavy tax these times? And ever, if your correspondent's £5 per week (average) proved correct, the less or tax on the basis of a 20 per cent, profit would only be, say 4s per week each. It would be easy to show how quite "a considerable amount of the tea-room takings would not in any esse go to the other refreshment rooms, but, ENTJF SED.
