On Monday next, the Otaki Rai.ng Club will open their spring meeting. Just why the Conference grants dates so close* to the Wanganui Jockey Club’s fixture, it is difficult to understand, as that body has the welfare of racing to study, arid a meeting following so close can have no other but a detrimental effect on the sport. Of the horses carded for the Maiden, Quinn’s Post may have most admirers. The Dominion Hack promises to provide a good contest. Possibly Hjlatus and Cleft will have had plenty of racing at Wanganui, and Kukri and Lady Frisco should run well. After such a bold showing as Tauira gave at -Morton, he should finish up a good favorite in the Hack Steeplechase. The Te One Memorial bears a very open* appearance, but Gold Souft and Lady Louisa may receive most support. A very moderate lot are engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap. Splcndidus, who ran fair at Wanganui, will only have to be saddled up to set punters on the move. Fidelio should account for the rest. If a couple am excepted, the horses accepted for in the Flying are third-class, and the event should he easily won. Avon Park and Botanist are nicely handicapped. The first day’s programme will conclude with the Welter, for which Rongora and Detroit may have ja following.
