SIR THOMAS MACKENZIE.
*&< THE HIGH COMMISSIONERS!-!!?. ['less Association—Copyright, Australian and X.Z. Cable Association. London, September 19. The announcement that Sir Thomas Mackenzie's extension of office • 1 as expired has created speculation in Angio-Xew Zealand circles as to his possible successor. The general opinion is that it is unlikely there will be any immediate change, in view of the many special problems arising out of the war requiring careful handling. The High Commissioner's staff has recently been- weakened by the breakdown of some of its most valuable" officers, and this is voiced as another reason against an immediate change in the position. Xew Zealand soldiers in Britain and France appreciate the manner in which Sir Thomas Mackenzie is carrying out their interests, and they are likely to deprecate any change in the •High Commissionership during trie war.
It is pointed out that the mam concern of Xew Zealand after tile war will be the development of trade, extending markets, seizing naw ' ones, picking up disjointed commercial connections, and reporting on questions of finance antl re-organisation.
The Hon. J. Allen was questioned in Wellington last night regarding tlie cable about the High Commissionership. He said Sir Thomas Mackenzie's term expired some time ago, but it was extended indefinitely. The cabled statement that the extension had expired was incorrect.—Press Association.
