FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS.

Per Press Association. Wellington, September 13. I The Council of Education adopted the following recommendations:— That in order to secure satisfactory inspection of secondary schools, district high schools and technical high schools, additional inspectors, with special qualifications for. various branches, should be appointed; that a chief inspector of secondary education should be appointed, with general control of the inspection referred to. The Council also recommended that without prejudice to the general question as to the basis on which marks for various subjects in university • entrance scholarship examinations arc allotted, marks for history and for each science in this examination 1)0 raised from GOU to 750. The Council devoted much time to the consideration of the courses of secondary education required to meet the need of post-primary school pi i oils, the following recommendations being adopted :—First, a general secondary course with some de- , grcc of option, throe to live years; l ' secondly,, a vocational course in agri- ( culture for three years; thirdly, a

vocational course in home science for girls for three years; fourthly, a vocational course iu commerce for three years; fifthly, a mechanical course namely, a vocational course iu engineering and kindred branches. It was also recommended that a certificate' of proficiency of a somewhat higher standard than at present (taking in particular better security for good knowledge of English) lie the principal qualification for admission to the secondary ; course. Tlio Council was guided by the policy that all children who show at least average ability in Standard VI should he eligible for some form of i* I*oo secondary instruction*
