LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Year by year the usefulness of the Postal Department to the public in New Zealand extends. Post-offices and letter-carriers had an important part in the national-registration procedure last year, and the same machinery is in operation to help in the enrolment of the lispeditionary Force 'Reserve (First and Second Divisions) All doubts can be quickly settled at a post-office, and help can bo also obtained there in filling in a form. All writing-materials, including stamped envelopes (addressed to the Government Statistician), are available at post-offices.

Tlio public arc reminded of :he filth choir concert to lie held in the St. Andrew’s Hall this evening. An excellent programme has oeen arranged by the choir members ;nd the concert promises to outclass any previously held.
For the second time last week there were no charges of drunkenness nt the Police Court at Christchurch on Saturday last. The officials state that tlii s is a record in the annals of the Court for many years. There have been only throe convictions for drunkenness in three days, and the police stale that this is another record.
At a meeting of the committee oi the Stratford Bowling Club, it was decided, weather permitting, to officially open the Green on Thursday, October sth. Five new members were elected. The green promises to be in first-class order, thanks to the untiring energies of the green warden (Mr H. Edgecombe). Trophies for competitions wore kindly presented by Messrs J. Masters, C. Arden and S. M, Ponitt, thus enabling all entrance fees to be given to the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. It was decided to plant more flowering shrubs and generally improve the surroundings of the Green.
In reply to correspondence from the Secretary of the Taranaki War Relief Association, the Hawke’s Ray Association states that for the purposes of relief and as a basis for considering applications for assistance to returned soldiers or their dependents generally, it had decided to base it on the man’s domicile prior to enlistment, taking a period of three to .-ix months. The reply was received from the Hawke’s Bay Association in regard to a soldier, a Taranaki man, who had taken up land in Hawke’s Bay, and had applied to the Association in that district lor assistance, the Hawke’s Bay Association referred it to the Taranaki Association, who did not give the assistance required, as the case was not a necessitous one. A resolution was passed to that effect, and also drawing the attention of the Hawke’s Bay Association to the fact that as the man had elected to live in their district, the onus foil on them.
In the Supreme Court at New Plymouth on Tuesday, before Judge Rewards and a jury of twelve, hearing was begun ol the case in which Hilda Simons claimed £5Ol damages from the Taranaki County Council for personal injuries caused through a motor car falling over an embankment on a road under the Taranaki County Council’s jurisdiction. The plaintiff sought to prove that the accident which caused her injuries was due to faulty construction of a filling carried out by defendant Council with the object of doing away with an undulation on the Mountain road between Tariki and Inglewood. Evidence iu support of plaintiff’s claim was given by a number of witnesses, and rebutting evidence called on behalf of the Council. Tho verdict of the jury was unanimous that plaintiff was entitled to the full amount claimed, namely, £5Ol- Mr Johnstone moved for judgment, which was entered up accordingly, with costs according to scale.
