TARANAKI WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION.
At to-day’s mooting of the Taranaki Provincial War .Relief Association an aplication was received from the Hav.cra Patriotic Committee for assistance on behalf of a returned soldier who had taken up a farm of ninety acres in Hawke’s Pay. The man had entered into partnership with his brother, who wa s married, and they required about £3oo to purchase stock, etc. The men had invested all. their money in the farm and had made arrangements for the purchase of thirty-two cows. Discussion ensued as to if the case was a necessitous one. It way pointed out that the case was not one of absolute necessity, and the investment was not a good one. The fund was primarily for disabled soldiers unable to earn their own living. Members expressed the opinion that assistance should not be given to able-bodied men who could earn a living otherwise. The chairman (Mr Wilson) said he thought the case under notice should be turned down in the meantime, and if, at a later date, the man’s health failed or he required assistance, it could then he discussed. Members said the Association was not a lending institution, and if they assisted able-bodied men witli large sums, the funds would soon be depleted. A resolution was carried informing the Hawera Committee that the ease was not a necessitous one; the security was insufficient, and the Association was unable to give the assi, stance requi red.
