On the Sea

THE SUBMARINE MENACE.

LOSS OF THE BRITANNIC. Press Association— Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. /Received 8.50 a.m.) New York, August 3. It was announced to-day that the liner Britannic was sunk. The vessel was unarmod. Mr T. Lawson, of the lino, staff of the "Stratford Evening Post," reminds us that the Britannic was one of the transports engaged in bringing back the Eighth Contingent in the Boer War from Africa, leaving Durban for Wellington, which port was reached in August, 1902. "Trooper" Lawson has lively recollections of the Britannic as a troopship, these being now recalled by the sudden end of the liner as announced above. It is a coincidence that the Eighths went to the war in the ill-fated Surrey, which ended her career on the rocks, and now comes the loss of the ship which brought the Eighths back to New Zealand
