PALMERSTON "HAD."
ALLEGED ASSASSINATION OF KAISER AND CROWN PRINCE. WILD SCENE AT OPERA HOUSE. Per Press Association. Palmerston N., July 7. A rumor originated here to-night that the Kaiser and Crown Prince had beeen assassinated by the mob in Berlin. The rumor soon reached the Opera House, where Mr. W. H. George was delivering a lecture on Egypt to a packed house. The Mayor announced the sensational news from the platform, and the audience rose in body, cheered and sang the National Anthem. The ambulance men from Awapuni Camp gave a haka, amid indescribable scenes of enthusiasm. Finally the Manawatu Times office was rung up and the rumor was contradicted.'' How the news originated is a mystery. Some say that it was featured on the screens at the pictures shows, but the managers say that their first intimation was from the Opera House. A proliable explanation of the rumor is that news of the rioting in Berlin was posted on the Times' window.
