Official visits were exchanged to-day at "Wellington, between the Japanese -Admiral and ' the Governor, Prime Minister, Major, and military and senior naval authorities, states tho Press Association.
At the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon before Mr W. R. Haselden, S.M., Mr Truby King applied for a land agent’s license on behalf of Mrj F. W. Webster. The license was ‘granted.
Robert Henry Quale, who did not appear, but entered a plea of guilty, . was charged at the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon with breaking ;his pro? hibition order. Constable Scanned, of ' Whangamomona, gave evidence as to the arrest of accused. Quale was fin;ed 20s, in default seven days imprisonment, and was allowed fourteen days in which to find the money. The Wellington Trades Council, in a resolution; calls attention to the fact that according to the statement of the Minister of Defence a large proportion of married men had not enlisted. As the Government’s liabilities are therefore not so much, the Council calls qn the Government to increase the soldiers’ pay by 7s a week to the same as in Australia, or to allow the men to go to Australia and, enlist.—Press Association. > ( ,• - / ■ ■ . > A. i*
On the occasion of the wind-up of ;the teachers’ refresher class in physical training, a social was held in the school last evening, when dancing, singing, competitions, and games assisted to make an enjoyable evening. The music for the dances was supplied by Mr C. H. Fox, and - was highly appreciated, and Miss Papps carried out the duties of M.C. very satisfactorily. The gathering broke up at one a.in. The number of instructors in physical training for the whole of New Zealand is only ten—six men and four women teachers—so it will be teadily imagined that there is plenty of work to do. Accused stated that though not generally a drinking man, he was at the time of the bigambus marriage suffering from the effects of drink, and he did not fully realise what he was doing. Accused elected to be dealt with summarily, and in pleading guilty, said heb did not remember committing the offence, as he was under the influence of liquor at the time. Constable Scannell, stationed at Whangamomona, said on June 12 he received a message to the effect that the money was missing from Hodgeman's whftre. O’Brien had been at the whare during the day. Accused, when arrested, said he did not know what he had done with the money. Sonie time ago accused had had a fall at the tunnel and it. had; affected his head. On one or two occasions: o’Rrieib-'had f stolen watches from bedrooms- of his mates, hilt they had always been returned. He-bvas a hard wOrkmg laboring man. and,drink was the whole cause of the offence. Accused asked the Magistrate to make an order of £1 a week against him. Sergeant Dale said the man needed a prohibition order taken out against him. He had been in gaol for about fourteen days. The Magistrate sentenced O’Brien to three months hard labor. •
