The Carranzists ambushed a considerable force of Americans, killed several, and captured a score. The Mexicans lost a few. The announcement of the skirmish is stirring the United States war feeling, but Mr Wilson is still hoping that General Carranza will avert hostilities.
The Consuls and other Americans are fleeing from Mexico. There are riots and disturbances in the border towns.
Mr Lansing has notified the South American .Republics that if war comes the United States will defend itself against further Mexican invasions, but will not intervene in Mexican affairs.
Advice from Mexico allege that German repi’esentatives encouraged Carranza in bis opposition to the United States. The troops were remaining in the country for moral rather than material purposes. German citizens in Mexico are treated with great consideration, and their property is unmolested, the Americans placing property in the hands of German friends when the owners are leaving Mexico. From information disclosed by a competent authority, in connection with the news concerning the activity of Captain Franz von Kittellen, the latter is now under indictment at New York on a charge of conspiracy to foment strikes in American munitions plants. Ho is under arrest in England. AMERICAN PREPARATIONS. London, June 22. The Times’ correspondent at Washington states that military preparations continue, and that General Funston has demanded sixty thousand militia. Preparations are iu progress for tbe withdrawal of twelve hundred Americans remaining in Mexico City.
