SIX O’CLOCK CLOSING.

Owing to delays over the absentee vote, it is now stated that the six o’clock closing is unlikely to operate before the end of June. Pee Press Association.
Auckland, June 22
A large public meeting was held in the Town Hall to-night, at which the Mayor presided, and passed resolutions demanding that hotel bars should be brought' under the Shops and Offices Act; also expressing indignation that the Government had not made provision for 6 o’clock closing, and asking for a referendum on the subject if Parliament is not prepared to introduce the necessary legislation without it. '.

A, well-attended meeting of business "then, at the Chamber of Commerce, 1 was addressed by Mr Armstrong, sec’'i'etafy l of the Moderate League, and' ' adoptee} the following resolution;— ■’ ‘‘That tins meeting of commercial arid professional men of Wellington' is strongly opposed to the request made by a recent deputation to the Prime Minister for a referendum bn the question of six o’clock closing, and that the said deputation hud no authority to speak on behalf of the commercial community. Further, that this meeting looks with grave doubt upon the experiment of curtailing the hours of licensed houses, and urges the Government to firmly resist ail pressure to hurry the passing of legislation on a matter that should only be approached with the greatest caution, and after thorough investigation.”
