A military funeral was held at Dannevirlso yesterday (states the Press; Association) when Private James ,S. Ryan, who died at Featherston Camp on Sunday, was bunco. A tiring party, the pall bearers, and a military band wore present from the Camp.
The time for the drawing for the Stvtdebaker oat- (presented to the Patriotic Society Funds by Mr Newton' King) has been postponed until 26th July. A limited number of tickets are still obtainable from members oi' the Patriotic Committee.
The annual meeting of the Stratford No-License League will be held in the Wesley Schoolroom on Thursday evening, at 7.30 sharp. The business is important, and the President (Mr ,). W. Boon) requests all temperance people' to attend.
The local abattoirs closely resembed a bacon factory yesterday, there being a fine display on the rails of pigs from all round the district, farmers having taken advantage of the-favorable weather to secure their winter supply o* home bacon. Pembroke Road sent a particularly choice lot'to bo .dressed.

The Education Department now issues to pupils who have done satisfactory advanced High'' School work what is called a "Higher Leading Certificate." This certificate entitles the holder to a'bursary of £2O per year so long as he continues University work. One of these certificates has just been issued to Master C. H. Rogers," of Stratford.
A general meeting of the Stratford branch or the Taranaki Schools Committees' Association iwill bo held in the Stratford School on Saturday, 17th hist.; at 2 p.m. All committees, whether affiliated or not, are requested to attend, as the business affects the whole district, viz., to endeavour to select two out of the five candidates standing lor the new Education Hoard.
Tlie explanation given in regard to the article in the Thames Star (which formed the subject of Parliamentary comment on Friday) was that there ' was not the remotest intention of its; being pro-German. As a matter of fact the whole policy of the paper had, been violently anti-German, as the files would prove. The writer of the. article was "suffering from nerves" and a fit of despondency at the terrible news as it was at first received, and he was not alone in the Dominion in' this respect. It was admitted that the article was indiscreet and regret hat! been expressed that it appeared. . Attention is drawn to the new rulesi ga/.etted on June Ist with regard to judgment summonses. The most important are the following:—No. 11: Summonses must he served seven clear days before the day of hearing. No. 1-1 : The application must be accompanied by deposit, of expenses sufficient for the debtor to attend the Court, return home, and maintain himself, during the time occupied in such neys. No. lu: No summons may be adjourned unless it is shown at the J original bearing that sufficient groundsj exist for making an order of commit-! tal, and no case may be adjourned sine die. No. 22: If an order of committal is refused the costs of the sum-! mons and order may not be added to the judgment debt. No. 23: K on order is made altering the terms of the judgment, or ordering payment by instalments, the costs of obtaining such order shall not be added to the judgment, unless the Court specially so orders. , j In "Everyhuly's Journal" for dune the .Minister of Defence and Mrs Peaivc, Mr Theodore Kink. A Christchurch Press Association telegram to-day states: Percy Ccorgo Eaton, of Sydenham, while riding n motor cycle, collided with a tram at 8 a.m., and got smashed up and died at the hospital.
