THE PRICE OF CHEESE.
1 A conference of dairy factory director;;, representing factories principally in South Taranaki, was held at Hawera on .Saturday, to discuss matter;; in connection with the Government proposal to commandeer the output ol choose this season. Mr W. D. rowdroll was voted to the chair, and Mitt. C. Barleyman was appointed secretary. The Chairman ill outlining the 'objects of the meeting, said the Gov'ernment had invited members of the National Dairy Association to meet and discuss the question of fixing a 'price in connection with the proposal Jto commandeer the season's output. I Both he and Mr Forsyth felt that they 'would like to have the opinion of cheese producers of Taranaki before meeting the Government. He understood the Government could eommandeer tile whole output, but they could not commandeer it at their own price, it must be at market price. Last year the representatives of the cheese factories offered 15 per cent, of their output at 7d II)., but had taken :j() per | cent at 7.',d. The loss to the Now Zealand cheese makers, reckoning t'.ie difference at between the commandeered price of 7.1 d and the average market price of 9. ! (l, amounted to £315,000, and the loss to the Kaupokonui factory alone amounted to £15,540. On the motion of Mr Shcehan, seconded by Mr Allen, it was resolved, that the meeting appreciate the action of the executive. A discussion then ensued on the question of J price. The Chairman suggested that' the resolution should not ho published, hut fully concurred with the wish of j the meeting that it should bo an open one. The resolution was carried. After some discussion as to the method of procedure, it was finally resolved that a committee, consisting of Messrs Morton, I'owdroll, Forsyth, Marx and Murdoch bo sot up to drawup details re grade, shipping, storage, and finance, to he submitted by the National Dairy Association as terms acceptable to Taranaki cheese factories. Failing the Government accepting these terms and price, a committee , consisting of -the chairman and one director of each factory be set up. j
