ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
SERIOUS MOTOR ACCIDENT. THREE MEN INJURED. Per Press Association. Wellington, June 5. A serious motor ear accident occurred this evening to a party who were returning from the Otaki races. P. J. Griffin, licensee or the Gresham Hotclj Wellington, was driving a Cadillac car, in which were also Messrs D. Pilmer, P McLaughlin (of Melbourne), F. M. Hickey, and R. H. Skip.vith (who had been acting as starter at the races). All went well till To Horo was reached. Then, just as the car was crossing an embankment, the steering gear broke and the car swerved and went over the hank. Help was soon at hand, with the arrival of other motoring parties returning from the races, and the work of rendering aid to the occupants of the wrecked car proceeded expeditiously.
It was found that three of the men fared badly. They were Griffiiv (broken arm and injury to chest), Piltner (broken collarbone and cuts)' HicUoy (badly cut about the head, but not believed to be seriously injured). Slfijfwith and! McLaughlin escaped with a severe shaking. T& injured men were placed in another car and taken to CtakT, four .niilfes distant. There they were transferred to the New Plymouth express train njul brought to Wellington. First aid was rendered by a soldier on the train, assisted by Mr P. Dobson, of Melbourne, and the railway officials did all possible to make the sufferers as comfortable as possible until medical attention was available.
