At a meeting of the Anti-Conscrip-tion League in Wellington, seventy members agreed to sign the following pledge:—“l, a member of the AntiConscription League, fully conscious of the attempt that -may be made to impose conscription 'on this country, recognising that such a system must destroy the sanctity of human life, and hinder the social and industrial emancipation of the workers, though realising the grave consequences that may follow my opposition, hereby solemnly and sincerely affirm my intention to resist conscription, whatever the penalties may he.” As a result of the meeting, at the Alexandra Hall, a large number of additional members were obtained for the league.

In spite of financial stress, solid progress ill being made on the eastern end of the Okahukura-Stratford railway. Work on the combined railway and traffic bridge over the Ongarue river is now in full swing, and the structure will, soon be an accomplished fact. About eighty men are employed on the Okahhkura tunnel, and since the recent strike everything is going well. A fair number are also engaged on general, construction work at Matiere, whilst Mr G. Cameron, sub-con-tractor. is making excellent progress •with the sihaller turnups eh route. Tinwhole of these, including the big tun pel, have been, pierced, and the. contractor is now engaged in the bricking work,of the smaller holes. The brick? are, locally, made, being manufactured at the Public Works Department brick works ; atj Tuhua.,» A tram-line is being constructed between these works and the station yard site at a distance of about five miles, which, when completed, will, to a certain extent, relieve the heavy traffic on the main road,.
