Mowbray pleaded not guilty to a breach of the Stamp Act, in that he affixed a used postage stamp to a letter. M. P. Anderson, a telegraphist in the Post Office at Stratford, said he cleared the post office box on 25vh March last and took the letter (produced in Court and addressed to liawera) to the acting postmaster. Thomas Parcel said the previous witness had given him the letter, which he enclosed in an official envelope addressed to the postmaster at Hawera asking him to deliver it to the address and find out the name of the sender.

The letter, which was responsible for tbe proceedings, was produced in Court, and Mowbray identified it as being one written by his wife, and signed with his name. The Magistrate suggested that the case should be adjourned and that tbe wife should also be charged in conjunction with Mowbray.

Constable Robertson said be served the summons on defendant, and he (defendant) told him that he had no stamps in bis possession, but had purchased the stamps to put on the letter at the Stratford Post Office. Defendant, on oath, said be did not write the letter. It was in the handwriting of his wife, as also was the envelope. He knew. nothing of the stamps. He was not positive that he posted the letter or would he deny that he had posted it. Li answer to Sergt. Dale, Mowbray said he believed that he told the Constable that he had purchased the stamps and posted the letter. The Magistrate said he would adjourn the case. He would sooner settle the case at once, but if Mowbray would not plead guilty he had no other course than to adjourn it till June 16, in the meantime the police to lay an information against the wife. Mowbray said he wished he had brought his wife with him to give evidence, and under the circumstances bis conscience would not let him plead guilty. DRINKING AND NON-MAINTEN-ANCE. David Henry Katwright was charged with excessive drinking and disobeying a maintenance order of £1 a week in respect to his wife. After hearing the evidence of Mrs Katwright, who said that Katwright was (j 7 behind in respect to a maintenance order, the Magistrate sentenced the accused to six weeks' imprisonment with bard labor, the warrant to lay at the Court office and not be issued providing lie paid £1 into the Court next Friday, and £1 a week thereafter. Katwright was ordered not to move more than ten miles from Stratford without the permission of the Sergeant of Police.
