NGAERE NOTES.

The first meeting of householders foi the election of a School Committee ha\ - nig lapsed the second meeting was held on Monday evening. Mi T. K 5. Coleman was in the chair, and the annual report and balance-sheet for the adopted:—The balance-sheet for the year ending 31st December showed a credit balance of £l7 13s od. The secretary, Mr A. I). Walkei, read the following annual report: The school has again had a, successful year as legards the school work, which accorded high praise by the Inspector, Mr Whether. In the examination for Standard VI., held at Stratford, 13 pupils were presented; of these nine gained proficiency and two competency. A Junior National Scholarship was gained by Ivor Saunders, with high marks, and a Junior Free Place by Roy Walker. Owing to the large number of pupils in Standard VI. who left school at the end of the year, the roll number shows a decrease, and now stands :t 99. Two pupils have left to attend the school recently opened at Pukengahu, and the 101 l number will lie still further reduced if, as seems probable, a new school will shortly be opened r*t Stuart Road. The average attendance for last year was 95, and for the March quarter just ended 90. The attendance in the junior room has lately been irregular, chiefly on account of sick ness and we deeply regret the loss by death of Meta Hollard, one of the brightest and most promising of the pupils. Miss Mackie, after two years of good work as probationer, left in Decomber to take up the position of assistant at Tarata. In February Master Maurice Rogers commenced his duties as probationer, and gives promise ,of becoming a useful teacher. We regret that owing to a case of infantile paralysis the school was closed from Maim loth to 24th. The school was then thoroughly disinfected by the health officer. By the kind invitation of Mr and -Mrs True-love, we held a garden party at the Ngaere Gardens on the breaking-up of the school for the midsummer holidays, which proved very enjoyable. The annual excursion to Fitzroy on 17th February was a great success, 210 going from Ngaere, which is easily a lecord. We consider it was a great advantage to join with Elthani and go by special train. During the year the committee cleaned the tanks and gutters at the school. We also had the trees on the south side of the horse paddock topped and trimmed. Hedges, fences, etc., are also beinc attended to. In conclusion, we wish to congratulate the teachers on the excellent; results of their year's work. We also.wish to thank Mr Newton King for kindly supplying seeds and manures for the school garden plots.—H. 0. Taylor Chairman Ngaere School Committee.

The following were elected a committee:—Messrs T. E. Coleman (chairman), H. Taylor, L. K. Tarrant, R. .McMillan, A. D. Walker (secretary). Votes of thanks were passed to the. retiring committee and to the teaching siaff for their good work during the past year.
