The acceptances are splendid (he jumping events, contrary to expectations, filling well. The scratching pen has boon freely used in the Borough Handicap, but there is still material enough engaged to produce a <good contest. Greenstreet and Mia Cara may be the elect of backers. Immensity and Flingot will only have to fence well in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeple to have that event to themselves.
, A baker’s dozen paid up for the Wanganui Steeple, included in which are a number of tried cross country horses. Naupata will have a big pull [ over the majority of his opponents, by reason of his hurdle racing during the last few weeks. Daylight Bill is said J to be backward. Hurakia is reported as being something “extra special”
over the big country hut may be reserved for Ellerslie. Master St rowan, Braeburn, and Capt.’ Mackay all have pace, whilst Nita is a great fencer. Altogether the event looks open. Nauputa Jackman and Capt. Mackay should make the race exciting. A. very choice lot are engaged in the Kaitoko Hurdles. Austin, Arlington and Crown Pearl appear the best. In contrast to the previous event, |the horses engaged in the Century [Hurdles arc not a first-class lot. and are certainly below the standard one would expect to find in a race like the one under review. Tararua Jack, Art and Vladiau should have admirers. ) Each of the ten acceptors for the Connolly Handicap has ;an undeniable chance, on paper, and a more even lot would he hard to find.
