FRENCH DRIVE THE CERMANS. ARTILLERY ACTIVITY IN THE CHAMPAGNE. The High Commissioner reports;— London, May lo (4.15 p.m.) South of the Somme near Vermand Guillens, the French executed a coup-de-main, permitting a drive of Germans from the front line trenches. in the Champagne region, there is artillery activity in the sectors of Maison de Champagne and Butte de Mesnil. SURPRISE ATTACK REPULSED. Umr«> Press Association. Paris, May 14. A communique says : We repelled a surprise attack on a trench south of Roye. The only event on the "Verdun front has been a violent bombardment in the Mort Homme region. ENEMY THROWN BACK AT VERDUN. Paris, May 15. Semi-official: Attacks ;on Verdun continue without cohesion or success. Friday marked another sanguinary feat, and on Saturday evening - the enemy were,again everywhere thrown back. The French have appreciably advanced southeast, of Haucourt, the German storms of artillery being unable to overcome the valor of the French infantry.
CENERAL HAIC'S REPORT. London, May 15. General Sir Douglas Haig reports: After a very heavy bombardment on. Saturday night by guns of all types, three parties attacked Plogsteert Wood.
