“SOLDIERS DAY!"
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the general committee in connection with Soldiers’ Day floral fete, was held last evening, Mr D. J. Malone presiding. Mr W. P. Kirkwood said they had received one or two designs for a souvenir for Soldiers’ Day, but they did not seem' suitable. He asked for an extension of time in which to report, on tile matter. Hon W. Cavncross, Eltham, wrote replying to the secretary’s letter to the effect that he would be pleased to uo what he could to aid the function, atjd he hoped it would prove ft great SUC- ; cess. The acting town clerk, New Plymouth Borough Council, wrote stating that he had keen directed to inform the committee that the New Plymouth Borough Council extended its sympathy in connection with Soldiers’ Day. The, Taranaki County Conned wrote thanking the committee for its kind invitation to be present at the fete. The Hon. See. of the Hawera Patriotic Committee wrote: At a recent 1 meeting of the committee, T was in- | structed to inform you that we will , do everything possible to assist to make your Easter Monday gathering a success, with which we are heartily sympathetic. Wishing yon every sne- ; cess. The Hon. See. of the Inglewood Patriotic Committee wrote stating that he was instructed to write to the committee for gome tickets and pamphlets. The committee would do what it could to .further the object in view. Major J, MeNanght wrote, re the committee’s application for military forces to attend the show grounds on Easter Monday, that he had forwarded the request to the District Headquarters, Palmerston North, for consideration and approval. On receipt of the j reply he would communicate the deei- i s\on to the committee. Major MeNaught thanked the committee for its i invitation, and he wqnld endeavour to I be present. Mr Dingle said he had been promised the use of a horse for about a week prior to the fete. Ho could guarantee to supply a horse, cart and r harness to do the*carrying for the fete. Mr F. Foley, convenor of the side show committee, reported excellent progress for the proposed side show for ' Soldiers’ Day. A rehearsal had been • held, and the combination showed j great promise. It had been proposed j to give a performance at Toko on J Monday, April 16, all proceeds to go to patriotic funds. Providing the costumes could be procured and the
eompany whs suffii'k-h'tly polished, the latter should assert itself after the 3rd rehearsal, to lie held at the end of the week. It bull been suggested that some of the company leave Stratford on the morning of Wednesday or Thursday previous to Easter Monday, and make a circuit through Kaponga, Opunake, Hawera and Eltham, giving a short performance in the main streets and at smaller places on the way. Regarding pictures in the Town Hall on Easter Monday night. Mr Foley reported everything was in first-class order for the picture entertainment. As an extra attraction for the public, it bad been arranged for snap-shots to be taken on the ground and to be shown on the screen at night. Reports were also read and received from the different committees. It was decided that the'clock, valued, at £lO, donated by Air Peters, should be given as a prize for a gnesfling competition for the number of tickets handed in at the gate ,in the day of the fete. Mr Kirkwood said he had spoken to Mr Fleming, and he had stated that the present train arrangements were unsatisfactory as far as Pa tea people wore concerned. Ho suggested that arrangements should be made to commence a train from Pa tea at 8 n’clo -k to return at 5 p.m.—The matter was loft in the hands of the train arrangements committee.
