In connection with the annual school picnic, concert and dance to. be held at Tuna School to-morrow no pains have been spared to ensure success, and an enjoyable day is guaranteed to all who attend. The net proceeds go to the Patriotic Funds.
While shunting operations were in progress yesterday afternoon, the Whanga train was driven alongside the platform with such momentum that the big concrete block at the end of the line was removed from its foundation. Otherwise no damage was done.
Miss Austen (the young people’s
friend) will hold a “heart to heart” talk with ladies in the Midhirst Hall to-night. at 7.M0 o'clock, and in thq Parish Hall, Stratford, on Thursday, 6tli, from 4to 5 and 7to 8 p.m. The Mayoress (Mrs J. W. "Boon) will occupy the chair. .
The Masterton Queen Carnival closed- last night, the total number of votes recorded being 5,931,206. The
carnival returns amount to over £25,000. Mrs 0. Donald, of Feirtlierston, was elected Queen! and the result was declared by the Hon. W. F. Massey to thousands of people.—P.A.
The Whangamomona train did not depart from Stratford until about 7.45 last evening, being 45 minutes late. The delay was attributed to the large number of trucks that had to he shunted in the yards, and to the fact that the guard’s van had to be unhitched from the Hawera tram.
Mr C. T). Sole begs to acknowledge with thanks one sack of potatoes from Matthew Gall, of Toko, for the Soldiers’ Day Fund. Farmers who have promised swede turnips and vegetables for the Boys in Camp are asked to deliver same at the railway goods shed before 3 p.m. on Thursday, attaching card with name thereon.
The length of nine chains of the Mountain Boil'd at" Ngaere, 1 which; ’at the last meeting of the County Council, the engineer was authorised to have tar sealed, is now practically completed. To-day a commencement was made with the work of giving the road the second spraying of tar.
The list of cases set down for hearing at the weekly sitting of the Stratford Magistrate’s Court on Friday comprise twenty of the civil order, one defended, three judgment summons, an information for the disobedience of an order, one for crossing a level crossing in a motor while a train was approaching, one for riding a motor cycle at night without a light and one for using obscene language. The Magistrate will also deliver his reserved judgment in the case, Davidson v. Fraser.
