STRATFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford School Committee was held hist night, when there were present;— Messrs I*. Skoghmd (chairman), E. W. Hancock, W. McDonald, J. McMillan and F. J. McDonald. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs T. C. Fookes and 1* • Cramer. CORRESPONDENCE. P. S. Whitcornbe, secretary of the Taranaki Education Board, wrote stating that .Miss Terry had been appointed’fifth assistant; Miss Muriel Sanderson, 2nd year pupil teacher, and Miss Elizabeth McCulloch 4th assistant At the Stratford school.—Received. P. S. Whitcornbe, secretary of the Taranaki Education Board, wrote informing the Committee that the Board had no power to appoint a medical in spec tor, but representation would he made to the Department. —Received. ! J. 13. Hine, M.P. for Stratford, j wrote stating that ho had forwarded the Committee’s letter re accommodation at the school and the purchasing of a site for proposed high school, to , the Minister of Education. —Received j The acting station master wrote stating that in answer to the Committee’s \ letter re adult tickets sold in excess ot number of, children of 15 years and under, he regretted that the charge could not lie waived. —Received, j W. G. Reid, acting secretary of the Taranaki School Committee’s Association wrote stating that members - )l the executive would like to meet the Committee with a view of discussing 'general school matters and also to bring before the Committee the objects of the Association.

HEADMASTER’S REPORT.' The Headmaster (Mr E. Tyrer), reported : The average attendance at tho school for the first five weeks of the year was. 698. During the last tortnight however, owing to the prevalence of measles, the attendance has fallen off, especially in the primary ' school ; and for last week the average was only 642. We are fortunate this year in having classes- fairly equal ui numbers, and consequently, though the-school is, full .there is ,l,ittje over; I crowding. • 'During' the' last week the I wooden'ipart of the building luys been [thoroughly sprayed and disinfected, and all the rooms have been fumigatled. During tl)o hottest part of the ! day many of the classes have been [taken out in the grounds. The asphalt .between the infant room and the main building shows signs of breaking np and needs to be attended to at once before the weather breaks. The boys held swimming sports on the 9th March, and their credit balance of £6 19s was handed over to Mrs Budge /or the Red Cross Funds. A statement of accounts in connection with the sports is attached. :■!<

McDonald moved, and it was decided -that the matter of repairing the asphalt in the school grounds he left in the hands of the chairman to con'er upth Mr T. tDv'J SdUivan.t " : • Tlie Chairman reported that considerable damage had been done to the school fence and iock off the gate on Monday night. The Chairman said that a letter should be sent to the Defence Office pointing out that damage had occurred.—The Chairman moved that a letter be forwarded to the Defecnc Office stating that damage was done to school property on | parade nights, and in that the committee would consider the advisability of terminating the agreement with the Department if the matter was not rectified.—Carried. i Mr. McMillan reported that he had interviewed Mr Davidson and he had decided to effect the necessary work to the school grounds for the sum of £2O, The work would commence In one month’s time. Messrs Fookes and Cramer were appointed a visiting committee for tho mouth. Accounts as certified to were passed for payment.
