A SERIOUS CHARGE.
MAXWELL AT COURT. REMAND TILL 24th MARCH. •i BAIL ALLOWED. At the Police Court this morning, (before Mr A. W. Reid, J.P., an elderly man named David S. Maxwell apj pea red to answer a charge of indecent exposure on the Ohura Road, Toko, on 14th January last. Sergeant Dale appeared for tho police, and the accused was not represented by counsel. Sergeant Dale stated that Maxwell had failed to appear - at Court to answer the charge on 28th January, when a warrant was issued for his arrest. Accused was arrested at Palmerston North on Saturday last. His actions had considerably hampered the police as witnesses had since loft the district. He asked for a remand the 24th, and stated that ho plight then have to ask for n further remand, as one of the principal witnesses was now in Auckland. The accused had put the Department to considerable trouble and expense. Accused: “Am I permitted to make an explanation about my disappearance? My business arrangements arc all disorganised, and I have not been able to collect rents etc.” The Bench: “It is all your own fault.” Accused applied for bail, and same was granted, self in £IOO, and two sureties of £SO each. The case was remanded till 2!ih inst.
