AN OLD MAN’S DEATH. Per Press A«oonrATtON. Pahiatua, March 15. A Pongaroa identity named John Fitzgerald, over ninety years of age, an Imperial Army and Maori war pensioner, succumbed at the hospital to injuries sustained in a trap accident. Fitzgerald was in the habit of walking to Pongaroa township, seven miles away. A week ago, whilst returning home, he was given a ride by E. Walker. The trap capsized on a bank, where, it is alleged, the occupants remained all night. A few days later another settlor discovered Fitzgerald in a helpless condition alone at Walkers’ whare. A post mortem was held, and the doctor attributed death to dislocation of the neck. The inquest was adjourned. A TROOPER DROWNED, Oamavu, March 15. Trooper Kelly, of the Eleventh Reinforcements, on final leave, was drowned while bathing in the Kakamii River.
