Tlie Church of England sale of work was conducted with great success this afternoon in the Parish Hall. The sale will be continued up till top p.xn. Musical items will be rendered during the evening. 'Wirth Bros. Circus, after spending a few days in the North, passed through Stratford per special tram this morning. The circus train was drawn by one of Price’s 8.8. engines, the largest engine seen on the Stratford lino. A preliminary Inquiry into the mishap to the steamer Regains at Long Island, Queen Charlotte Sound, was recently held at Nelson, and the evidence has been, forwarded to the Marine Department at Wellington. It is evident (states the Post) that the vessel encountered a dense fog while hound from Wellington to Nelson, and Captain Vickermnu considered it advisable to turn round and shelter under Long Island. Apparently thej Regains got too close to .the island, and fouled a rock, suffering slight damage. It has not yet been decided whether or not any further inquiry will he necessary. A matter of interest came to light at the Westland Land Board meeting on Thursday (says the Westport News). A number of people have taken Possession and built house., along the reservation in the vicinity of Ngakawau and Hector. As this is a portion of the Harbour Board endowment. and as such should he a revenue producer for that hoard, llu.-e people, hv settling there uitnout right or title, arid not in the surveyed township of Hector, have been e, id ing their responsibilities ii. the shape of vent.
