CHRISTMAS “MENU.”
WITH THE TROOPS IN EGYPT. Private W. D. Sullivan, of the 4th (Canterbury) Reinforcement, writing from Egypt, to his brother, Mr D. G. Sullivan, under date December 28. enclosed the following “menu” card provided for the troops in conjunction with their Christinas dinner:— MENU. OYSTERS. An/ac Cove (re-fused) , son*. De la Nile. Mock Turtle (censored) FISH. Wanted (at present interned). ENTREES. Eggorsee cook. ROASTS. Boeuf a la Bully (Tray Bentos) Lamb and green peas (missing since 1913) POULTRY. Johnny Turk (Bayonet stuffed) Gyppy Chick (hatching) Roast millet and duck under the table VEGETABLES. Dugout-kumeras roast and boiled Cabbage (feint hearted) New Potatoes (’Xmas 1917. perhaps) SWEETS. Lyddite Duff with Shrapnel Sauce Triumph Pudding with Torpedo Sauce (R.1.P.) Trifles (Suv-la-mixture) DES(S)ERT. , Oranges (h,ig °nes 2 for a half) DRINKS. Ales XXX (Speight also 1917) Lemonade - Tea —'Water (washing) Ou Request Deakins’ Jam (Gott strafe Deakin) God Save the King Gizeh "Camp, Egypt. Private Sullivan adds: “And <t got nothing.”
