OBITUARY.

MAJOR JOHN COLEMAN. The into Major J. H. Coleman, whose distressing death was reported yesterday, was horn at Clontarl County, .Dublin, Ireland, in IH.'iti and joined the 12th Hoy a I Dancers at the age of 17 years. He saw active service in the Second Kaflir War' the Crimean War and the Indian .Mutiny. At the close of the .Mutiny he left the 12th Lancers and joined the Honourable East India Company’s service, being appointed to the Ist Bengal Light Cavalry, which regiment, when the direct government of India was assumed by the British Crown, was taken over into the imperial servin' as the 19th (Princess of Wales’ Own) Royal Hussars. Major Coleman lelt the Imperial Army in 187 d and accepted an appointment in the jww Zealand Defence Forces, acting, nntd 1900, as cavalry and mounted infantry instructor. During his long active 1 . I career lie has been stationed in Sont ii Africa, India, Egypt, Turk y and Russia. and saw warfare in nearly all of them. Major Coleman held the South African war medal, and the Crimean (with clasp for Sebastopol), Turkish, Indian Mutiny (clasp for Central Lidia), and Imperial and New Zealand long-service medals. He leaves a family of three, Mr Arthur Coleman, of Napier, Mr Alfred Coleman, ol Stratford, and Mrs C. M. M'Allum, of New Plymouth. A formal inquest held at Now Plymouth yesterday made it quite clear that Major Coleman, who was subject to sudden attacks ol giddiness which caused bim to fall down, iel I oil the Breakwater on Wednesday last and was drowned, and a verdict to this effect was returned.
