GIFT AUCTION SALE.
A GREAT SUCCESS. The Farmers’ Gift Sale held by the Associated Auctioneers of Stratford on Saturday last, proved an unqualified success. Mr Newton King, after fifteen years’ spell from selling at the hammer, opened the sale, and was received with a round of applause On his mounting the rostrum, with his customary happy manner, he soon had the buyers in good fettle, and everything went with a swing from the ; dart. The quality of the stock yard- ■ ed was a credit to the district, and taken on a whole, compares favorably with anv vardings at ordinarv auction sales. The total yarding comprised; 815 sheep, lid cattle. 95 horses, 95 nigs. 1 gig, I dog, and 8 goats. 'The decision of the committee in turning nart of the cash donations into stock, proved a wise step, all stock bought being re-sold at prices considerably above cost. It is not yet possible to say definitely what the sale will realise, but it is understood from the secretary that it will be in the region of £I6OO. The original idea of holding 4 a Farmers’ Gift Auction in Stratford was introduced to the Stratford Patriotic Committee by Mr H. E. Abraham, and to him is due the credit of ‘ organising the Auctioneers, and of so arousing enthusiasm that a band of willing workers got right into the collar, and rendered yeoman service. To mention names would he invidious. The venture grew from an anticipated possible £SOO worth of entries to the fine array of gift stock totalling over three times that sum towards the Patriotic Fund, and th e promoters have reason to be proud of their effort.
