Sir Thomas .Mackenzie, accompanied by a number of New Zealand officers and men, presented the Maori war canoe to the captain of the Ibouki, who. in replying, expressed his gratification to the references to aJpan's convoying the overseas troops. He added: "Japan anticipation that the struggle was not merely a desire to fulfil the obligations of its Alliance but. to join bands with van to uphold the cause of humanity and civilisation." The souvenia marked the cor,dial friendship which he hoped would always exist between the Japanese Navv and New Zealand forces.
