The Commission awarded farmers an extra threepence per bushel above the price fixed by the Wheat Acquistion Act where losses were incurred thereby. Mr Hall stated it is possible that the loss on the wheat transactions will be £IO,OOO, in Victoria CSO,OOO, in Queensland £30,000, in South Australia £30,000, while in Tasmania and Westralia there will also be heavy losses. Cards circulated among the soldiers show that seventeen per cent, prefer land settlement after the war. Melbourne, January 26. The Treasurer has expressed satisfaction at the response to his appeals for subscriptions for the second war loan.
