The question of the earlier closing of hotels in the interests of soldiers is again very prominent. Mr Holman (Premier) has brought a storm upon his head by referring to early closing and its advocates as “wowsers,” and “maudlin Sunday School sentimentality.” Speaking at Parramatta to-night he said the Government and the Labor Party favored the nationalisation of liquor. He advocated a referendum on the question, and said that the Government thereby obtained authority, it would devote itself to carrying out the decision. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Sydney, January 22. The Soutli Coast miners have resumed work. The Herald, in a leader, says it is hardly possible that the records of the war will reveal anything more dramatic, more stirring on the "hole, or more encouraging than the reception of the last defenders of Anzac as described by a contributor to the Manchester Guardian. Mr Holman, at Parramatta, stated that the result of the control of prices to the public saved P 1,301,000 purchasing money. Melbourne, January 22. The coal lumpers still rcluse to work on the night shift.
