The German-Austrian episcopates refused the Belgian Bishops’ request for a mixed commission to investigate the German atrocities in Belgium. BRAVE , ALLIED AIRMEN. TRIBUTE FROM THE GERMANS. (Received 8.5 a.m.) Paris, January 15.
Flying over the German lines in a biplane, Captain Sallier and Lieut. Legall, wore surprised by a Focker machine, from which an explosive bullet struck their petrol tank, enveloping the machine in Haines. The occupants tore iVp their journals and dropped pieces on the French telling them of their fate. Next day German airmen flew over the French trenches and dropped a letter paying tribute to Sallier and Legall’s bravery and stating they had been buried with military, honors. , artillery action only. The High Commissioner reports:— 'London, January 16 (12.85 a.m.) i Artillery action alone is reported on the French 1 western front.
