(Received 9.20 a.in.) j Melbourne, January 4. Senator Pearce (Minister of Defence), quoted extracts from books published by Mr George Turner, who was recently German Consul-General, and entitled “The Awakening of the People of the Pacific.” Mr Turner declares that he visited many villages 1 where only one person could speak English, and as he left he could hear them singing “Deutchlapd Titer Alles.” He states that the Australian colonies have ripened into sociahstis States, working strenuously towards the severance of the last link binding them to the Motherland. It was not on account of England that they had not rendered military assistance hut because they wanted Samoa and New Guinea. Mr Turner coneludes: “Inquiry has made Germany wise, and her future colonial policy will he different from what it. has been. After the victory, we will bind on the helmet tighter.”
