Brigadier Carmichaelwho has previously visited Stratford, will act in the capacity of chairman at the Town Hall on the occasion of the Auckland City Silver Band’s visit on Wednesday, January sth. Very favorable comments on the playing of the band come from those who have heard the combination on their visit to the Queen City, and it is fully anticipated tlidt the object of the entertainment, viz., help for the Serbians, combined with an interesting programme, will be sufficient guarantee of a full house on Wednesday next.

The Stratford Racing Club months ago decided that the Now Year meeting should be run in the interests ot the Patriotic Funds, and now, in . the same laudable spirit, the committee invite all members of the Expeditionary Forces to the meeting, and avail themselves of the free use of all paits of the grounds, the only stipulation being that men appear in khaki. It is certain that this generous offer will be much appreciated, and the added touch of khaki to the lawn and surroundings will make for increased color and a happy effect general!v.

A few clays ago at the depot on Pembroke. Road the local Inspector ol Stock vaccinated against blackleg about four hundred calves, which number was slightly behind last ycai s figures; but the majority were a ci edit to their owners. It is a remarkable fact, that although the food supply is, practically speaking, draun from one source (skim-milk or whey, and in a number of cases the addi-, tional artificial food is identically the came) there is a fifty per cent, difleienco in the quality and consequent value between the calves of some owners. The foregoing facts rathei point to the weakness being found in the methods ol applying the food.! so that regularity of hours of feeding and the proportionate allowance toj each calf should be more carefully attended to. The result would he greater satisfaction to the * owner In possessing animals of a stronger constitution and with greater resistant powers to the attacks of lung and stomach worm and parasites which account for a serious mortality amongst young animals during the fifst year of their lives in Taranaki and stiir- eon nested dairying lorahticjdl .
