A TURKISH COMMUNIQUE

WAR OFFICE DENIAL. i,- : ■' [United Press Association.] (Received 10.10 a.m.) London, December 28. Only the bare fact of the New Zealand operations in the Senussi country have reached London. A Turkish communique claimed that the Senussi in Egypt continue to successfully attack Matruli, 240 miles oast of Solum Bay, when three hundred English were killed, and the remainder and the Mohammedans were captured, together with two guns, ten motor cars, and much munitions. The War Office yesterday issued a denial to The Turkish statement. The authorities say; ’ There was no fighting . with the Arabs on the western frontier between the 14th and 24th, but we located and- attacked the principal Arab force eight miles from Matruh on Christmas Day and dispersed them. There ,was trifling British loss.

A Cairo official message received this morning states that a British force from Matruh located Senussi a little westward of Job-el-Medwa where a New' Zealand battalion and Sikhs immediately attacked, and were completely successful,' the enemy being driven westward towards Wademyid. Our casualties were slight. A Paris communique states: A cruiser in exploring Solum Bay destroyed a Turkish battery. The trawler Paris attacked two large enemy submarines, which fled after having fired at her for two hours.
