GENERAL.
\ . / There are enthusiasts who believe that we may have migrations of swallows to and from New Zealand. On Tuesday night the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society received a circular from the Otago Society, enclosing a suggestion from M. Le Bouef, director of the Melbourne Zoological Gardens, that New Zealand should attempt to acclimatise the bird. The Otago proposal was that 20 societies should comijine for an aggregate importation, in order to ascertain whether the farllying birds will be content to make their homes in New Zealand, there was some uncertainty amongst the members of the Auckland Council as to the habits of the swallow—e.g., whether it was likely to be of any value as an insect-destroyer, and whether the desire for its importation was based on entirely sentimental grounds. After consideration it was decided (says the Herald) that the Game Committee should make a study of the natural history of the swallow before the question is finally dealt with.
