PERSONAL.

The death of Mrs AY ills, wife of Mr D. Wills, of Lake Road, Hnwera, is reported hy the Star to have occurred on Tuesday morning.

! -Mr James Mackenzie, late Undersecretary for Lands, at Wellington yesterday, received a presentation of plate and office furniture from the officers of the Department as a memento of hig long connection therewith. The Right Hon. W. F. Massey made the presentation.

The New Zealand Rhodes Scholar selection will he made at Government House on December 21. The nominees are:—-Athol HudsonC Wellington), F. A. Airey (Auckland), Arthur Ponder (Canterbury), J. G. Anderson (Otago). Mr Ponder is serving with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and Mr Hudson with the Eighth Reinforcements.

' Under the auspices of the Tahora Rifle Club, a grand send-off and dance was given in honor of Mr Charlie Wilson, a very popular resident of the district (writes our correspondent). About 60 friends gathered together, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Mr Sid. Stockley was in the chair. The toasts of the evening, viz., the King, Arnfy and Navy, Overseas' Club, Our Boys at the Front, the Rifle Club, the Ladies, Fallen Heroes (in silence), and the Chairman, were proposed and responded to by Messrs Laloli, G. White, Sid. Stockley, W. Hallett, D. Higbt, H. Wilkinson, J. Rogers, J. Roos, N. Cleeland, J. Ken.na, F. Coxhead and C. Moorhouse. Songs were rendered by Messrs N. Cleeland, J. Roos and C. Moorhouse. Mr Wilson was the recipient of some handsome presents :By Mr H. Wilkinson on behalf of Mangapapa settlers, a case of pipes; by Mr Hallett, on behalf of the Tahora settlers, a wristlet watch; by Mr Sid. Stockley, on behalf of the Rifle Club, a cheque; by Mr N. Cleeland, on behalf of the Overseas’ Club (present not to hand). It is interesting to note that Mr W ilson has now served under the three last reigning monarchs. He has been secretary of the Tahora Rifle Club from its inauguration and also resident in the district for some 18 years. Having 1 always proved himself a splendid feli low in every sense of the word, the ! good wishes of the whole of the sur- ! rounding district naturally go with j him. The dancing and refreshments were much appreciated, Messrs H. I Bottomley and J. Roos providing the music.
