ARRESTED FOR THEFT.

ROBINSON’S ROLL OF LINOLEUM

OTHER CHARGES PENDING,

A stir was caused in town yesterday afternoon when “i t became known that an arrest had been made in connection with the theft (if a foil of linoleum from R. H. Robinson and Son’s shop in Broadway 5n October 27.

At the Magistrate’s Court this morning Andrew Naesmith, a strapping young fellow of about 6ft., was charged before Mr J. McCluggage, J.P., With having on or about October 27 stolen a roll of linoleum valued at £5, from Robinson and Son’s shop in Broadway. '

Sergeant Dale, who appeared on behalf of the police, asked for a remand until next Friday, at 9.30 a.in-. The Sergeant said prisoner was only arrested at 4.30 last evening, and the police had not - had time to investigate. He stated that more charges ‘were pending. -K- ’TO Prisoner asked for bail. >

Sergeant Dale asked that a substantia! bail be made, as' the other cases wore more serious than the one before the Court.

Mr' McCluggage reiuantled prisoner till Friday next, and allowed bail’ in self £soi and two sureties of £OO each. Accused is a baker, employed by the Central Co-operative Store. The police received information as to where the linoleum was concealed, and on visiting the Company’s bakehouse in Juliet Street, Sergeant Dale discovered the roll in an unused attic. The linoleum was concealed in two sacks and had apparently been put through the man hole in the ceiling, and was obscured from view'. The police continued their inquiries,' and visited the room occupied by Naesmith. After making a careful examination of the room a considerable amount of other property alleged to have been stolen from the Co-op, Store and other places was found.

Accused was arrested by Sergeant Dale and Constable McGowan,
