The Taranaki Presbytery lias granted to the Rev. J. Lowery, of Eltham, leave of absence until the end of the year owing to ill-health. Mr J. E. Wilson underwent a seroperation at a private hospital in New Plymouth on Thursday, and is now making satisfactory progress. Mr W. G. Kenrick, S.M., is leaving ou‘ a prolonged holiday tour, on Mon- i day. December G. Mr Kenrick expected to-be absent from his duties for about six months. Mr H. B. Samuel has been appointed to the Chancellorship of the Duchy of Lancaster,, with a seat in the Cabinet. He retains the position of Postmaster-General, The Rev* H. J. Deane,, formerly vicar of* Patea, in a private letter, states that it is his intention to return'to the Dominion in the near future. The Speaker, on behalf of the members of , the House of Commons, presented a gold inkstand brooch to MisS'Violet'Asquith, who is marrying Mr Bowham Ca'rter on Tuesday. r-;,j idThe '-New Zealand Board'of Control of the Bristol and Dominion Producers’ Association has appointed Mr H. Baden Powell to the position of general manager, necessitated by the resignation of Mr H. G. Hill. Misses Mi Trask and L, Leary, of the New Plymouth Hospital, and Miss H. Flynn, of the Hawera Hospital, have been appointed to the first division of the Third Contingent of Nurses, who will leave New Zealand on the Marama. : i The Hon. W. D. S. ; Macdonald (Minister of Mines) will visit the mining 'districts of the South Island (next week. Lieutenant T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., will escort, the Minister through the areas in the Westland district, and on the trip will take leave of his constituents before going to the-front.

Miss MeDiarmid, fis a graduate of Edinburgh Univer-, sity," and since February, 1914, |has * held a position at- . the . Wellington ‘ Girls’, College. There ‘ were ~ twenty- . eight applications. Reg. I. Hill, who was killed in action at the Dardanelles on August ‘B, was a prominent and popular member of the Okato Football Club. Ho was one of the first to volunteer, leaving with the Main Body when only nineteen years of age. News ’of his death wa s sent forward some 1 weeks ago by one of his comrades, j who assisted at his burial, hut the official notification has only just been received.
