The Military Cross, for conspicuous bravery, has been awarded to Incut. (!. R. ’Blackett, of Raglan. Mr Fred Foley, of His Majesty s Theatre, returned to Stratford hist night after a visit to the South Island. Mr J. Masters, Stratford’s delegate to the Patriotic Conference to ho held in Wellington to-morrow, left by the mail train this morning. Mr Pierce C. Freetll, late editor of the Christchurch Star, has purchased the Mauawatu Times, a journal ho controlled some years ago. Sergeant Tom Laverty is now in hospital at Alexandria where lie has been for the last two months. Ho is to-day reported as progressing favourably, ■ Captain J. A. Wallingford, who was invalided to England from Gallipoli, suffering from strained heart, will arrive in the Dominion at the end of December. He is unable to return to the front, but will instruct .the forces in machine-gun and musketry work. Mr W. A. Lowe, the well-known theatrical manager, has enlisted for service with the reinforcements. Mt Lowe was formerly a prominent figure in Wellington athletic circles. Another theatrical manager, Mr Alf. L’sley, intends to enlist so as to go into camp in February. General Gallieni, who has been appointed to the Anglo-French War Council, was born 66 years ago at Saint Beat. He served in the i- ran-co-Prussian War and afterwards server from 1877—1881 in the Niger. Prom 1896—1905 he was Commander-in-Chief in Madagascar. He has played an important part in this war and was entrusted with defence of Paris.
