-- ’The Hon. J. A. Hanan is expected to arrive at Xcw Plymouth on Wednesday. Mr Jacob Marx, of Mangatoki, is seriously indisposed, and he has found it necessary to take a rest. Air Smith, of Palmerston North, manager of the Bank of New Zealand. is about to lake a trip to the Old Country for the benefit of Ids health. Air E. Griffiths, of New Plymouth, has received advice that Ids brother, -Major G. C. Griffiths, has returned to the Dardanelles from Egypt. Another brother, Lieut. G. Griffiths, leaves witii the Eighth Reinforcements. ■ Lieutenant-Colonel IA. E. Loach (Canterbury infantry Battalion), who was wounded at Gallipoli, and invalided to England, was a passenger by tile .Mongolia, which arrived at -Melbourne from London this week. Constable Ai. Kyne, of the Hawera police force, was - among the successful candidates who passed for the rank of sergeant in the recruit police examinations. Sergeant Wade, of Wellington. formerly of Eltham, also qualified for the rank of senior sergeant.
Waata Wiremu Hipango, a wellknown Maori chief, passed away on Saturday night, after a short illness, at the age. of 62 years. Deceased a short time ago presented Hipango Dark to the town of Wanganui, and took a keen interest in the welfare of; the district. | <■ Mr J. G. Anderson, dux of the Southland Boys’ High School, and editor of the Otago University Review, has been nominated as the Otago candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship. 191 G. The candidates from the other centres are: •Wellington, Mr Athol Hudson; Canterbury, Mr Arthur Ponder; Auckland, Mr F. A. Airey. Dr. A. IV. Averill. Anglican Bishop of Auckland, will leave Auckland next week on a visit to Otorobanga, 1e Kniti, Tuumarnmii, and Ohura. where he will open a new church. He will afterwards travel down the Wanganui River to Wanganui, and then visit Now Plymouth, where on Sunday, November 28, be will consecrate the transept and side chapel, which has been added to St. Mary’s church as a memorial to the late Archdeacon Govett.
