) By the death of Mr William Soltan Pillans, of My res, Inch Clutha, Otagt. has. lost one of her pioneers hi connection with the opening up of the Otago district. The late Mr Pillans was a very close friend of the Hon. Thomas .Mackenzie, High Commissioner, and with him was responsible for tlie opening up a track through .the Clinton Valley, which enabled a good deal of the Catlins district to be opened up for closer settlement. In addition to this Mr Pillans was ■<*• sponsible for a good deal of the work in eonnetion with the opening of the West Coast Sounds. After' th? sale of his Manuka Islands station he went Home for a trip, and on returning to New Zealand settled in Gishorne. where he died a few days ago. The late Mr Pillans was an uncle of Mr P. Thomson, solicitor, Stratford. The deceased gentleman married Miss Mary Hajliwell, of Dunedin, who predeceased him b v a few years.
