AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL STATISTICS.

Pending the introduction of more elaborate machinery next year for collecting agricultural and pastoral statistics, the Department has again to rely on collection .through the pgst for particulars in regard to the more important of our crops. Forms have just been posted to occupiers as indicated in the advertisement. On these forms occupiers of land are asked to make a return of the area that they have sown in crops. The hearty cooperation of occupiers is earnestly requested. It is obvious that accurate particulars of the area under crops are of fundamental importance in obtaining statistics of crop production. The most careful estimates of yields cannot but furnish misleading results as to the' total production if the area on which the calculation is based is under or over-estimated.' The events of the past year have shown the importance of statistics ot production. The Government must be guided by these figures in deciding whether an embargo on export may be lilted. Again,] it will be on the information furnished by statistics a>s to area tinier ci*pp that an estimate can he arrived at as to what special arrangements, if any will be necessary to provide sufficient labour for the harvest. All occupiers to whom forms have been sent are urged to fill them up and to return them, while those who have more than one acre under any one crop and who have not received a form should apply to the District Agent of the Department as indicated in the advertisement appearing in another column of this, issue.
