TO-DAY’S OPENING PROCEEDINGS The Stratford Howling Club was officially opened 11>is attcrnoon by Mr .McMillan, tlio president, in the presence o a large attendance «l howlers and their lady friends. The weather was ideal for howling, though dark clouds gathered overhead just as the President v. Vice-president match commenced. The green was in excellent condition for the opening match, and opinion was expressed that it was looking its host for some years past. Mr X. J. King, who is recovering Irom a serious illness, was on the verandah of the pavilion looking much like himself again. Mr McMillan, in declaring the green open, said the howlers would not he content if he kept them waiting on such a perfect bonding day, so ho would only deliver a short speech. The speaker welcomed visiting howlers and expressed the wish that everybody present would have an enjoyable afternoon. Of course, with a good day and a good green, howlers could not help hut enjoy themselves. “This season,” he said, “we must not forget J that we are privileged to play howls and other games, and for that privilege we must thank our lads in bine and onr lads in khaki. While we are playing. 1 am sure no howler will lorget we are under an obligation to the hoys.” The speaker said the bowlers of Taranaki were subscribing to a. separate fund for the Sick and Mounded Soldiers,' and he was sure the Stratford subscriptions would considerably augment the account. “The self denial which those ot ns who are not able to go to the front are asked to make.” said Mr McMillan, “is little compared with what tlie hoys in uniform are doing,” In conclusion, the speaker stated that two of the Club members. Messrs (I. Hunter and A. C. Hunter, had gone .into camp at Tr'entliam, prior to leaving tor the I rout. In presenting Mr (I. Smart, last year’s winner of the championship singles competition, with the 0, M. Curtis trophy, the President said he hoped the young men would wrest the trophy from the old men' this year. After the presentation had been made, Mrs McMillan threw first hall of the season, and on making a good draw, was loudly japphind ( ed. Play then proceeded.
