The Correspondenza states that after the Holy See’s repeated diplomatic protests concerniitg the Armenian massacres, the Pope wrote personally to the Sultan, who promised to stop the massacres.

(Received 11.25 apn.) ' Washington, October 12. The American representations to Turkey against the Armenian massacres were unheeded. It is not believed that the United States, will take further action.

In a further Note re the. William Frye case the United States' requests from Germany, if she finds it necessary to destroy American ships carrying contraband, that the passengers and crew be first removed to a place of safety in small boats.

THE U.S.A. ARMY.
Washington, October 11
Mr Harrison proposes an enlargement of the American standing army of 120,000 trained reserve to 300,000, with a reorganised national guard of 150,000 men, proper aeroplane equipment, and the doubling of the artillery and ammunition. Mr Roosevelt has been recently campaigning vigorously against the United States’ unpreparedness, pointing out that America is behind Australia, despite the enormous disparity of population. Whether Congress will approve remains to he seen.
