THE PATEA FATALITY. J r ' ; . o i;; Regarding Hie boating accident at the Patea Heads on Sunday, resulting in tlie deatjj of Mr Angus Mclntosh MacLeod, k appears that a party of .■ Jive, including the deceased, his bro-, tber, Mr Robert MacLeod, of Kith am,:, and Messrs X. When just beyond the eastern, wall a breaker, cans- ? ed the boat to ship a quantity of water, and while thi s .wa s being baled out another breaker filled the boat, swamping it. The occupants ‘jumped into the water (which was up to their i waists'), and a roller overturned the boat. The party called for the life line, but could not be heard, and those on shore did not realise the daiiger. The men then pushed the boat shorewards, but soon got into deep water in the channel. All except Tinney swam for the shore, deceased being given a grating. Tinner* clung to the boat and was carried* over the bar, but retained his hold, subsequently righting it. At this juncture, Mr W. Glenny galloped for the Harbor Board’s launch, which was speedily got under way and proceeded at racing speed to the scene of the disaster, in charge fVf Captain Tinney. Meanwhile, however, Mr P. Tinney had jumped into a boat and rowed to the rescue of bis brother who was quite helpless, there being uo oars in the boat that had overturned. The launch on reaching the 1 scene searched for the missing man for some time and then towed the large boat ashore, tlie smaller one having to he cast adrift and was picked up later.
